Stanley Yelnats IV (LaBeouf) goes to Camp Green Lake to cover holes everyday due to a family curse. He meets Zero, the descendant of Madame Zeroni, who runs away after he slams Mr. Pendanski with a shovel because Mr. Pendan he calls "Sploosh". Stanley recalls the story of his great grandfather at God's Thumb, whereupon Zero and Stanley climb the mountain. Stanley sings Zero the lullaby he was taught and the curse breaks. When they return to Camp Green Lake, they are surrounded by yellow-spotted lizards then the harsh Warden Walker, Mr. Pendanski and Mr. Sir. However, the lizards don't bite them because they "hate" the scent of onions. An attorney of the Texas Attorney General arrives the next morning and requests Stanley's release. Zero reveals the old treasure chest that Kathryn "Kissin' Kate" Barlow buried has Stanley's name on it, also revealing he can read now. At home, Stanley's family open the chest and Stanley splits the bonds to get Zero a private investigator to find his Mom, who had been looking for him as well. Clyde Livingston, a baseball player whose shoes Zero had stolen from a charity auction and Stanley had been falsely accused of, celebrates with the Yelnats and Zeronis the success of Stanley Yelnats III's new foot-odor, Sploosh. Camp Green Lake became a Girl's Scout Camp, a coincidence because Mr. Sir, an authority figure of the camp, told the boys, "this isn't a girl's scout camp", referring to the backbreaking digging. Throughout the movie, flashbacks of their ancestors appear from aside.
Holes received positive reviews from critics and audiences, currently holding a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 77%.
